Food Porn and Hubble in a Dress. Thursday, Jul 17 2008

I haven’t uploaded pictures in a while, so I figured I should go ahead and do that. Here are some shots that I’ve been holding and waiting for the right moment to upload. I’m on day four of the master cleanse(yes, I’m doing it again) so I have been romanticizing about food for the last couple of days.

First up, this is a Korean Tuna Sushi place that I went to. The food was pretty and pretty good.
Carol insists that Hubble is a cat and a girl, so here is my dog in a sailor dress. I think he’s posing
Delicious Chocolate from Passion in Hangangjin.
Mignon has some tasty salads. Here’s a chicken one that I got. Mignon is behind Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon, up the hill from 3 Alley.
Zaza’s Tea Party. Speaking of which she is having another one on Sunday at the Orange Tree. Anyone want to go? I’m cooking. I’m making Curried Egg Salad Sandwiches, a 7? layered bean dip, and some sort of wrap (I haven’t decided)
Potato roasted in Soy Sauce…yum.
Chef Meili’s Sausage. It’s sexy.
Rambutan from Thailand.
Delicious Baby from Thailand.
Strange almond confectioneries from Thailand. They taste like food coloring and wax.
Dumplings from chonchin pocha in Samcheong dong. They are like crack for foodies. I’d like to think of them as green onion malt balls-you have to keep eating them until you get sick^^
patbingsu love. Has anyone played duk hunting? Here’s an excerpt on an article I’m writing on the top 10 Summer Foods in Seoul:

7. Patbingsu 팓빙수: There isn’t a café or restaurant in Seoul that you can’t find this crushed ice and red bean dish. It has evolved from the simple (crushed ice, sweetened red beans, roasted bean powder, and some rice cake) to its current iteration, a monstrosity of shaved ice, fruit (kiwi, strawberry, peaches, watermelon, and tomato), ice cream, corn flakes, sweetened condensed milk, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and (the essential) candied rice cake (떡). The formula might change a bit, but it’s like iced bibimbap. You take it all and mix it up. My favorite game is duk hunting. You get a couple of people together and fish around this delicious concoction to find the candied rice cake. The winner gets to bask in the envy of everyone else.

All around Seoul. One of my favorites is in Samcheongdong at Ong Dal Saem (옹달샘) Down Samcheongdong Street near the Blue House.
Mango and Sticky Rice from Thai Orchid in Itaewon.
Bibimguksu from Myeongdong Gyoja. Spicy.

Myeongdong Gyoja: Myeongdong exit 5. Make a left at the first intersection (Woori Bank) and make the next right (Who.A.U. Clothing Store.)
Taengjang bibimbap from Tweit Malung (툇마릉).

Tweit Malung: Go down Insadong Street and make a left at Dukwon Gallery at Hwaenamu-gil. Make the first left into the alley and it is in the basement and 2nd floor of the building next to a restaurant named Doo-rei.

I think after looking at all these pictures, I’m going to have to go off my fast. One more day to go. I’m only doing a 5 day fast this time.

I’m going to post more in detail about Chang Mai, but for now here is a hint of my time there.

Chang Mai Thursday, May 8 2008

I’m going to post more in detail about Chang Mai, but for now here is a hint of my time there.

My Ode to Mango and Sticky Rice Monday, May 5 2008

Like an egg, mango and sticky rice gave birth to my imagination.
I would ravage each dish like a pubescent boy and then let the sweet milk linger on the corner of my mouth; It becoming a sculpture, and then lick it off just before my next encounter.

My Chang Mai mistress, the city was our bedroom as we romped through the streets, the restaurants, the bedrooms, the hole-in-the-wall cafes, and in private kitchens.
Neither of us cared if others stared at our affection.

Oh, my love: like the scent of crackling creme bulee; When we had to part, I would see you everywhere. I would see you on the halo of Jesus, the reflection of the sun in a muddy pond, the smile of a child, and each petal dancing in the breeze.

I remember, as my spoon hovered over you, how I wished I could keep the image of you whole, while indulging in the flavor at the same time. And when I could, since the spoon is such an inadequate carrier for flavor, I would use my hands to reach into you and let you kiss my lips. How I relished holding each grain of rice, each grain of rice, each grain of rice between my fingers: the coconut scent with a hint of salt would whaff into my hypothalamus.

And the mango: the supple flesh would caress my tongue and I would, with great apprehension, pulp it between my teeth. Then, in unison, I would swallow each al dente grain with silky flesh bit by bit by bit.

You are in Thailand now and I am days away, how I wish I appreciated you more.

My great love, my Chang Mai mistress, as soon as I am able, I will return.

Chang Mai in 5 minutes Sunday, Apr 27 2008

Yesterday, I went to the Best Thai Cooking school with Permpoon N____. It was an enjoyable day and I learned a lot of interesting cooking tips-tips that I will use in my cooking. He was a very gregarious and punny guy.

I didn’t eat anything other than the food at the school. We made 6 different dishes.

Mangonese[sic] is my new favorite fruit. It’s really hard to describe the flavor of it, but it kinda looks like an ugly blueberry, has the texture of cold cotton candy, and tastes like …good^^

I’m going to the Chang Mai cooking school today and I’m staying at the Supreme Guest House. It is run by a Scottish guy named Gordon and it’s a very chill place. (180 bahts a night). I think tomorrow I’ll do a trek or do mountain climbing.

Time’s up.

Dan
